Now, take a small detour, turn right behind the house with the eye on it, and continue until you find yourself standing in front of a large painting that covers the entire wall of a house. You’ll see it on your right.
“Mezzano” by Davide Orler, synthetic enamel paint on hammock canva – 1955.1958 “This is the biggest painting I have ever made in the smallest place on Earth, a ship bilge.
Melancholy, memories, a heartbreaking longing for his homeland and mountains. Davide Orler painted “his” Mezzano during the long months he spent on ships. Using old hammocks, enamel pain and a thick needle, which was used to repair fishing webs and was gifted to him by a fisherman from Trapani, Davide started painting the skyline of the Pale di San Martino and, Iin the next three years, one piece at a time, he managed to enshrine the memory of a simple yet complex life.
The strong and wild features of the mountains, the old wooden structures of the old part of Mezzano, the stables, the fairs, the innovation and the people he once knew, they’re all here. On the background, one can see the very first truck, “Cobra”, driven by Gioanin Andreon: the head of the truck is in the shape of a skull, quite the metaphor of the end of this country life, unscathed by the culture of consumerism and machines, a “life that has now passed and will be forever gone with us, the elderly”.
