Go straight on then left onto via della Chiesa. On your left, you’ll see the Pistoia family’s fountain and just in front of it, waiting for a new and more useful spot to be put in, the wood-stack “Starry dream”.
You see it as it is right now, but next time you come to visit, you’ll find a surprise waiting for you. Just don’t think about it, for now.
Go on and turn left, one more time.Your incredible journey is about to end. Walking up the mild slope, your gaze will be caught by a new, big installation on your left: “Obtuse earth, only light will save us”. It is made of a big and a small cube, the Earth and the Moon, thoughts framed in biased and self-destructive travels; the rays of the sun are the only way out to redemption.
Continue alongside the iron railings, then look round 180 degrees up on the wall of the post office. This is “Lina’s enchantment”, a wood-stack inspired by romanticism for a romantic village. And what could be more romantic than a mermaid, a mythical sea creature abundant in charm and mystery par excellence? A swinging mermaid that enchants the beholder. Now cross the road.
On the pedestrian crossing!!! You are in the central square; there is a fountain and a painting on an old house, a popular portrait of a Roman soldier, quite the unusual subject, considering the complete absence of sacred links. Although, it could be Saint Expedite or Saint George, who were often portrayed in full armor and weapons.
On the right, on the opposite side of the fresco, located right at the corner, is our last wood-stack. The “Holy man” is a representation that is similar to portrayals of primitive man, who, starting to ask questions about life, finds answers in a magical representation of himself. A sacred figure, in short, but without religion. A kind of divinity that doesn’t respond to any creed, if not to the inner hidden one of man. This installation is powerful, primitive, yet refined, it marries the poverty of wood with the preciousness of gold.
So, just like gold, (please excuse my false modesty), this village too is a treasure trove and you have beheld it. Now, stay a moment longer: have a coffee, a snack, purchase something, drop into the tourist office where someone will tell you that Mezzano isn’t just the village, but the surrounding countryside too.
Walks and breath-taking panoramas, the suspension bridge, the Noana Valley, San Giovanni, mountain refuges, alpine dairy farms, the path of the giant trees, or just the beautiful meadows. Your head cushioned by cool grass, your eyes taking in the sky. Not having to think about anything. The bus stop is just here, the carpark where you left your car a stone’s throw away. It always seems to be time to go. Unfortunately. And to say goodbye.
Ciao, I am the Mezzano Romantica App: it has been a privilege meeting you.
Uphill again! Had I not said that it was all downhill…
The Bond house has blue shutters which…
